About the data
Everything here comes from free public data, joined on one page per model year. We don't buy data, and we don't rate cars. Pages were last rebuilt Oct 17, 2026; 6,496 model years are on the site.
U.S. EPA fuel economy data
Versions, mpg or MPGe, fuel type, EV range and the greenhouse gas score.
EPA data are U.S. government works. We use the numbers only, in our own words, and never copy fueleconomy.gov pages, text or photos. The source, file of Sep 29, 2026.
NHTSA owner complaints, recalls, service bulletins and investigations
Complaint counts by part of the car, recalls, bulletin counts and defect investigations.
U.S. public domain. Complaints are unverified reports owners file with NHTSA; we show counts, never their text. The source, file of Oct 17, 2026.
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings
Overall, frontal, side and rollover ratings for each version NHTSA tested.
U.S. public domain. The source, file of Aug 7, 2026.
NHTSA vPIC VIN decoder database
Decoding a VIN to its make, model and model year, on our own server.
NHTSA publishes it for developers to run themselves. We never send VINs to NHTSA. The source.
U.S. Energy Information Administration
Weekly gasoline and diesel prices by region and monthly home electricity prices by state, for the fuel cost.
U.S. government publications are in the public domain; EIA asks for a dated credit, which each page gives. The source, file of Oct 12, 2026.
How we count
- Pages follow EPA's model names for each year. A hybrid is on its model's page, as EPA files it. Heavy-duty pickups and vans, which EPA doesn't rate, have no pages.
- Complaints count once each, though NHTSA lists a complaint once for every part it names. They're unverified, and popular cars get more of them, so counts aren't a reliability score.
- Complaints aren't ranked against other cars. Without sales figures, a share of other models with fewer complaints would read as reliability, which raw counts can't show.
- Recalls count once per NHTSA campaign over the model year's history, matched by make, model and year, not by VIN, so a recall may not apply to every car of that year, and its repair may already be done. A campaign NHTSA's record says was replaced by a later one is shown as history, not as a separate repair. Recall text is NHTSA's, as written: a date in it that can't be right is marked "as written in NHTSA's record", not corrected.
- Fuel cost is fuel only: EPA's mpg for 15,000 miles a year at EIA's latest prices, shown at U.S. averages and, labeled, at the visitor's state's prices (from their approximate location, never stored). Model-year and comparison pages use the same figures. Plug-in hybrids, and fuels EIA doesn't price, use EPA's own estimate. It leaves out depreciation, insurance and repairs, for which no free data exist.
- Trims come from NHTSA's VIN data. A trim's engine, mpg and fuel cost are shown only where EPA names a version after the trim or NHTSA's VIN patterns tie the trim to an engine; otherwise the page says we haven't verified the trim's engine and shows the whole model year's numbers.
- NHTSA's overall rating on a page is the lowest it gave any version of that model year.
